S O M E T H O U G H T S ::::

PEACE, EARTH AND THE BODY

Peace and environmental sustainability must be grounded in a new way
of living in the human body. The old way isn't working.

Imagine sitting on a tree limb high in a tree, facing the tree trunk,
and working hard at sawing off the limb you're sitting on. That takes
a spectacular lack of understanding of gravity and lack of awareness
of what is supporting you. How would it be possible for someone
functional enough to climb the tree and wield a saw to be that

unaware? It's really a kind of pathology, isn't it?

That kind of pathology is at work when people perpetrate social
aggression, war, and environmental degradation. It takes a deep
numbness and alienation not to know that damaging the web of life
within which we all exist also damages yourself. That alienation isn't
merely emotional or spiritual. It is physical.

Take a moment to stop and create within yourself a feeling of anger,
fear, and aggression. Notice what happens to your breathing, to the
muscles in your back and belly, and to your overall posture. Most

people experience a clear sense of contraction and discomfort. In that
constricted state, you can't breathe, talk, think, walk, move, or act
in strong, efficient, graceful, and effective ways. In other words,
anger and fear weaken us. Moreover, contraction leads to a body state
of insensitivity and separation, which is the root of our ability to
do violence to ourselves, others, and the world around us. Alienation
leads to violence, and violence leads to more alienation.

How do we break the cycle? Alienation must be addressed as it exists
in the body. By learning how to open the breathing, stabilize the

posture, balance movement, and develop a radiant state of intention,
people can achieve a body state of awareness, power, and love and
learn how to use that to connect to the world and the people around
them. Whether one is raking a garden, typing at a computer, swinging a
golf club, playing a violin, giving a lecture, or trying to resolve a
conflict, placing the body in a state of calm strength will lead to
better results. And using daily tasks as opportunities to practice
being in this state of mindbody integrity makes the little things of
every day life part of the path toward a peaceful, sustainable world.

The question, of course, is: How do you open the body? And to help
people move in that direction I've written a short, new book.

REACH OUT: BODY AWARENESS TRAINING FOR PEACEMAKING- FIVE EASY LESSONS

A Free E-Book by Paul Linden, Ph.D. Downloadable at www.being-in-
movement.com

There isn't much peace in the world today. I wrote this book to
contribute to the development of a peaceful world. My hope is that
people will make and distribute copies of this book or refer people to
my website to download the e-book for free.

REACH OUT is based on the idea that social and international peace

must be built on a foundation of personal peacefulness. Though
peacefulness is usually thought of as a psychological or spiritual
state, Reach Out approaches it as a body state. The book teaches five
short, simple, practical lessons which show how to work with
breathing, muscle tone, posture, movement and intention to develop
kindness, inner strength, and a peaceful attitude. By learning to
maintain a peaceful body state during conflicts, people will have a
foundation for resolving conflicts in productive life-affirming ways.

DOWNLOADABLE FILE: Reaching Out is being distributed as a PDF file.

That is a cross-platform file format (can be read and printed on any
computer). The PDF file is 610 kilobytes and can be downloaded in
about three minutes with a 56k modem.

#1. WINNING IS HEALING:

Being In Movement Trauma Work- A workshop for body practitioners,
martial art instructors, and psychotherapists.

People who undergo trauma experience that they are powerless. They
numb their bodies to reduce feeling the trauma and their emotions of
fear, anger, betrayal, confusion and so on. In this workshop,
participants will experience breathing, intentionality, posture and
movement exercises from Being In MovementÆ mindbody training through
which trauma survivors can reclaim their power, their awareness and

their bodies. Once trauma survivors experience that they can
successfully protect their own boundaries, they can allow previously
banished thoughts, feelings, and memories to surface, and they can
find safe, effective and loving ways of living and acting in the
world.

#2.

Body Awareness as a Foundation for Aikido

Breath, posture and intention are the foundations for movement and
action. As such, they offer a clear and effective means of studying
and improving the self. In this Aikido workshop, the focus will be on
how to work with breath, posture and intention to develop Aikido
technique which is open, balanced, powerful and loving. The emphasis
will be both on how to use body awareness to improve the efficiency
and effectiveness of Aikido defense techniques and on how to use

Aikido techniques as a vehicle for studying the embodied self.

#3.

Reach Out: Body Awareness Training for Peacemaking - a workshop for
public & professionals.

Social and international peace must be built on a foundation of
personal peacefulness. Though peacefulness is usually thought of as a
psychological or spiritual state, this workshop will approach
peacefulness as a body state. Without a way to overcome the body's
fight-or-flight physiological arousal, people in conflict will be

stuck in an enemy mode of feeling, thinking, and acting. By working
with breathing, muscle tone, posture, and movement, you can develop an
integrated mind/body state of power, love and peacefulness. By
maintaining a peaceful body state during conflicts, you will have a
foundation for resolving conflicts in productive ways.
